It is with a sad and heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Joachim F. Seeger, MD, a distinguished diagnostic radiologist, educator and leader whose career spanned more than five decades. Dr. Seeger passed away peacefully on October 29 in Tucson at the age of 86.
Dr. Seeger earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1966, followed by an internship at the University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus. He completed his diagnostic radiology residency at the University of Michigan in 1970 and went on to complete a fellowship in neuroradiology at the same institution.
Dr. Seeger joined the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson’s Department of Radiology (now Radiology and Imaging Sciences) in 1981 and remained affiliated with the University of Arizona Medical Center (now Banner – University Medical Center Tucson) until 2009.
He held the title of professor emeritus of radiology and imaging sciences and served as chief of the Division of Neuroradiology, where his leadership helped shape the division’s growth and impact. Dr. Seeger mentored generations of neuroradiology fellows, diagnostic radiology residents and medical students, leaving a lasting legacy in academic medicine.
His scholarly contributions include authorship and co-authorship of more than 65 pioneering radiologic research publications. He was also recognized by several professional societies, including the Rocky Mountain Neurosurgical Society and the Western Neuroradiological Society, for which he served as president in 1992.
Dr. Seeger’s legacy is defined by his unwavering dedication to patient care, his mentorship in academic radiology and his role in advancing radiologic services in Arizona. He will be remembered for his intellect, humility and the quiet strength with which he served his community.
