In Memoriam: Arthur Gmitro, PhD

We are deeply saddened to share that our friend and colleague, Dr. Arthur (Art) Gmitro, passed away on November 22, in Tucson.Art Gmitro, PhD, image

Art devoted more than four decades to the University of Arizona, leaving an extraordinary mark on our Department of Radiology & Imaging Sciences, the College of Optical Sciences, and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, where he served as Professor and department chair prior to his retirement in 2024. His scholarship and leadership helped shape the direction of our field, consistently inspiring new ideas and higher standards.

Art was especially pivotal in advancing magnetic resonance imaging at the University of Arizona. He brought creativity, rigor, and technical sophistication to the use of MRI—not only in research but also in clinical care. His influence is woven into the way we think about imaging, the tools we rely on, and the spirit of innovation that continues to define our work. Across generations of faculty, staff, and trainees, he was a steady force for progress and excellence.

Beyond his professional impact, Art was a genuinely kind and generous person. He had an infectious enthusiasm for life, a deep care for others, and a gift for making people feel supported and valued. His presence enriched our community, and his absence will be felt profoundly.

Our thoughts are with Art’s family, friends, and all who knew and loved him. Information about memorial plans will be shared as soon as it becomes available.
